'A little beak emerged, sharp and bright. Two little eyes gazed up at Jack. The bird shook itself, and the shell fell away.
Jack sat back on his heels, astonished. Then he frowned. This was no place for birds! he thought and decided he would wait for the
mother to return, and then he would be rid of it. He opened the window to the blue sky and waited all day and all night, but the
mother never came. The chick cried with hunger. Jack dropped water into its hungry beak and went outside to fetch a few bugs.
Tomorrow, he thought, tomorrow her mother will come.

In the morning, he woke to the chick’s hungry cries. An orange throat looked up at him. The chick shivered.

She’s cold! Jack thought. He took the tea cosy and wrapped the tiny creature in it. He looked up at the window. Where was the tiny chick’s mother? When would she come?’
